Will a battery give me backup power in a blackout?

Some batteries and system configurations can provide backup power to selected circuits during an outage, but this depends on the specific battery, inverter and how the system is wired. We'll confirm whether backup is possible for your setup when we quote.

What size battery do I need?

The right size depends on how much solar you have, how much energy you use after dark, and your goals. Battery datasheets usually show nominal capacity and usable capacity; usable capacity is the more practical figure for day-to-day storage planning.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

In many cases, yes. Compatibility depends on your current inverter and system design. We can review your existing setup and recommend AC-coupled or hybrid options that suit it.

Are there rebates or incentives for batteries?

Federal battery support is useful, but not automatic

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries program is delivered through STCs and has specific product, installer, capacity and certification requirements. We keep this guidance carefully qualified because final eligibility depends on the current program rules and your installed system.

The battery must be CEC-approved and installed by an SAA-accredited installer with the appropriate battery endorsement.
Eligible systems are generally 5-100 kWh nominal battery capacity, with support calculated on only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.
The battery must be VPP-capable, even if joining a virtual power plant is not always mandatory for every customer.
The battery must be installed with, or connected to, an eligible solar PV system under 100 kW.
Installation and certification dates must meet the program rules. Do not assume eligibility until the quote and compliance paperwork are checked.

Incentive settings, STC values and certification dates can change. AZ Solar will confirm current federal and state eligibility before presenting a final battery quote.

Usable capacity matters

A 10 kWh nominal battery will usually provide less than 10 kWh of usable storage because the battery management system protects part of the capacity.

Backup is not automatic

Backup power needs compatible hardware and dedicated wiring. Some systems only back up selected circuits, and high-load appliances may be excluded.

Size around your evening load

The best fit depends on your solar generation, nighttime usage, tariff, export limits and whether you want backup, bill reduction or more self-consumption.

State incentive caveats

AZ Solar services QLD, NSW and VIC. Battery and efficiency programs are location specific, eligibility-dependent and subject to change, so they should be checked before any purchase decision.

NSW: the Home Energy Saver up-to-$15,000 zero-interest loan is NSW-only and eligibility-dependent.
Victoria: the Solar Victoria battery loan is no longer accepting applications, so it should not be treated as an available discount.
Queensland: battery rebate availability and settings have changed over time. Current status must be checked before quoting.
